Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-05-09
These terms govern your use of the Keychat browser extension and the mykeychat.com website. By installing the extension or using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use Keychat.
Who can use Keychat
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction) to use Keychat. By using Keychat you confirm that doing so does not violate the laws of your country or any agreement you are bound by.
What Keychat is (and isn't)
Keychat is an open-source browser extension that lets two Ethereum-compatible wallets exchange end-to-end encrypted messages over the public XMTP decentralized network. It is provided as a free utility by the Keychat Foundation.
Keychat is not a custodial service. We do not hold your wallet keys, your messages, or your funds. We do not run a server that you log into. We do not have accounts to delete, balances to refund, or moderators who can intervene in conversations.
Your responsibility
- Keep your wallet’s seed phrase and private keys safe. If you lose them, we cannot recover them. There is no “forgot password” flow.
- You are responsible for everything you send. Encrypted does not mean lawful — illegal content is illegal regardless of how it’s transmitted.
- You are responsible for understanding what your wallet is signing. Read every signature prompt carefully.
Prohibited use
You agree not to use Keychat to:
- Send content that is illegal where you are or where the recipient is.
- Harass, threaten, or impersonate another person.
- Distribute malware, phishing links, or material designed to defraud or harm others.
- Attempt to compromise, deanonymize, or denial-of-service the XMTP network or other Keychat users.
- Reverse-engineer the extension to extract or expose private cryptographic material belonging to other users.
Because messages are end-to-end encrypted and we operate no servers, we cannot proactively detect or remove prohibited content. Enforcement happens at the protocol and jurisdictional level, not via a Keychat moderation team.
Open source & intellectual property
The Keychat extension is open source. The source code is licensed under permissive open source terms; see the LICENSE file in the repository for details. The Keychat name, logo, and brand assets remain the property of the Keychat Foundation and may not be used to imply endorsement of unrelated products.
No warranty
KEYCHAT IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ANY WARRANTIES ARISING OUT OF COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE.
We do not warrant that the extension will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components. We do not control the XMTP relay network and make no guarantees about its availability, latency, or message delivery.
Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL KEYCHAT, THE KEYCHAT FOUNDATION, ITS CONTRIBUTORS, OR ITS AFFILIATES BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, RESULTING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE KEYCHAT.
OUR AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO KEYCHAT SHALL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS (USD $100).
Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold the Keychat Foundation, its contributors, and its affiliates harmless from any claim or demand arising out of your breach of these terms, your use of Keychat, or your violation of any law or third-party right.
Termination
You may stop using Keychat at any time by uninstalling the extension. We may discontinue the project, the extension, or the website at any time, for any reason, without notice. Because the underlying XMTP network is decentralized, your wallet can continue to communicate via other compatible clients even if we walk away.
Governing law & disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Keychat Foundation is established, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally shall be resolved by binding arbitration in that same jurisdiction, on an individual basis (no class actions). Where mandatory consumer law in your country gives you stronger rights, those rights are not affected.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced on mykeychat.com. Continued use of Keychat after a change means you accept the updated terms.
